Elephant Coast and Mkuze Game Reserve

Ghost Mountain InnLake JoziniOur sales advisor Ally, tells us more of her recent trip to South Africa….

Our incredible journey took us 4.5 hours east of Isandlwana to the Elephant Coast and to the Ghost Mountain Inn near Mkuze.  En route the scenery was spectacular.  We travelled through small villages, green pastures and mountains – the roads were empty and exceptionally good.  The hotel is so named as the mountain resembles a lady lying down looking at the sky

On arrival we met by the lovely Jean who is very passionate about the area and wildlife.  Her knowledge is exceptional and her excursions include Lake Jozini where you an view elephants swimming, Mkuze Game Reserve, Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Game Reserve for the big 5, a local village where you can go back to school and attend a class or stick fight with local Zulu warriors.  You can also visit the Isimangaliso Wetland Park and St Lucia, Tembe Elephant Park, Kosi Bay, Sodwana Bay for scuba diving, horse riding and deep sea fishing and also Border Cave which is a great archaeological site which has been occupied by humans for about 190,000 years
When we arrived the hotel was very busy as they had a group from Saga Holidays and Titan Travel but this only added to the atmosphere.  However, they left within 24 hours and we had the lovely Jean to ourselves.  She took us out on Lake Jozini which is one of the largest lakes in Southern Africa.  Word had it that there was a herd of elephants on the far side.  The afternoon was a perfect balmy summers day and the water mirrored the image of the surrounding mountains.  After 20 minutes we saw the elephants in the distance – there must’ve been about 70 altogether down at the waters edge.  The boats engine was cut and we sat in awe of these majestic animals.  Two of them decided to give us a view to remember and play fought in the water – we were mesmerised.
On the 2nd day we did an afternoon game drive to the Mkuze Game Reserve.  Again it was perfect weather and we were lucky enough to see white rhino, elephant, giraffe, and buffalo.  We were also taken to a ‘hide’ near a water hole but unfortunately, the impala heard us coming and ran off but we did see a turtle, water monitor and buffalo.

Our time at Ghost Mountain Inn only lasted 3 days before it was time to go and i thank everyone especially Jean for making this holdiay incrediable!
