If you’re a fan of Elephants then the Chobe National Park in Botswana is a must for you. This north eastern region of Botswana is renowned for its large population of Elephants that congregate here during the dry season; it has been estimated that around 90,000 to 100,000 live within the Chobe/Linyanti ecosystem! I lost count of the number of Elephants we saw in our 2 night stay but it must have been around 100 or more; including some at incredibly close quarters. Besides Elephants, Chobe also boasts frequent sightings of Lion, Buffalo, Hippo and Crocodile, along with all of the plains game.
We stayed at a lodge just outside the national park, in a private, quiet spot with a wonderful view overlooking the Chobe River. Chobe Chilwero is very comfortable and not oversized with only 15 cottages housing 30 guests at any one time; the cottages are spacious, well decorated without being over the top, and all have fully equipped en-suite bathrooms. The main lounge has a good selection of books to while away an afternoon and plenty of sofas and armchairs to relax in. Should you need anything, Chobe Chilwero’s courteous and extremely well trained staff are never far away, and always willing to attend to your every need. You’re never hungry either; with buffet breakfasts and lunches, afternoon tea and cakes served in the garden, and deliciously cooked dinners from a team of highly qualified chefs.
The lodge offers two main activities; you can explore the national park in an open 4×4 vehicle with one of the lodge’s knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides during the morning or in the afternoon. The other option is to board one of the specially adapted motorboats and enjoy a sunset cruise on the Chobe River with a chance to see some of the many Elephant herds come down to drink in the afternoon at the river’s edge.
If you fancy taking it a little easier, and need a bit of pampering then the lodge also offers a wide variety of in-room spa and massage treatments. With all of this on offer it really is worth spending at least 2 nights at Chobe Chilwero in order to experience all the Chobe has to offer both in terms of wildlife sightings and relaxation therapy.
