Do you remember i touched upon “what to do in Mombasa” in my blog “There’s more to Mombasa than its beaches“…. well good news has followed with Fort Jesus, Mombasa’s most popular tourist attraction being added to the Unesco’s World Heritage List. The Fort has been considered with having outstanding universal value and joining the 936 properties which form this list. Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese from 1593-1596 to the designs of Giovanni Battista Cairati to protect the port of Mombasa. The fort’s layout and form reflect the Renaissance ideal that perfect proportions and geometric harmony are to be found in the human body. The property covers an area of 236 hectares and includes the fort’s moat and immediate surroundings.

The Kenya Lake System also joins the Fort in this list and amazingly comprises three interlinked relatively shallow lakes (Lake Bogoria, Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita) covering a total area of 32 000 hectares. The property is home to 13 globally threatened bird species and is the single most important foraging site in the world for the lesser flamingo, and a major nesting and breeding ground for Great White pelicans. It also features sizeable mammal populations, including Rothschild’s Giraffe, Black rhino, Lion, Cheetah and Wild Dog.

Tswalu Kalahari is South Africa’s largest private game reserve, covering an area of over 100,000 hectares in the “Green Kalahari” of the Northern Cape.
With the emphasis on conversation tourism, Tswalu is able to offer superlative game and sightings of some of South Africa‘s rarest and most extraordinary wildlife, including the desert black rhino, black-maned Kalahari lions, meerkats, cheetah, rare antelope, and the elusive aardvark, aardwolf, pangolin and porcupine.
In the game reserve all guests are allowed to design their own itinerary from bush walks to horseback safaris. The safari experience is tailored to suit you.

I have just read a beautiful article on Tswalu’s website which shows the field guides up close to the elusive Pangolin. … an amazing site especially during the day as these animals are nocturnal.

The reserve also has an award winning spa, now a combination of sensual spaces which combine to create an inspirational venue for what must be one of the most unusual spa experiences in Africa. All guests can indulge in authentic massages and exfoliation treatments by the local therapists whether this is in the indoor spa or outside.

Tswalu Kalahari Spa has won the “Best Safari Spa Award” in the 2011 Les Nouvelles Esthétiques Spa Awards. Tswalu Spa Manager Corli Schoeman was even named runner up in the “Spa Management Excellence Award”. Here at Africa Sky we give them our Congratulations and hope this is the first award of many.

Kenya has over 1100 different species of birds and with the habitats ranging from forests, to wetlands and even the rich grasslands most of the birds are easy to spot. Such a rich variety inevitably produces a stunning array of birdlife, ensuring the country’s reputation as the heart for all birdwatchers of all levels of experience.

One of the unforgettable sights on a tour of Kenya is the spectacular flock of pink flamingoes that cover many lakes in Kenya. There are also soda lakes which cover many species of water birds from Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha and even Lake Elementaita which are mostly enjoyed by pelicans, flamingos, fishing eagles, herons, kingfishers and others.

Kenya is a paradise for bird lovers and here at Africa Sky we can tailor-make an itinerary for you around the area which has the birdlife that you would like to see.

The five star, Giraffe Manor has just official opened The Garden Manor, extending the number of rooms from six to ten. The manor is world renowned as being the only place in the world where you can feed and photograph the giraffe over your breakfast table and at the front door. These new rooms mean that many more people can enjoy the spectacular highlights of these fascinating mammals. The manor has so much history that the new building has taking its inspiration from the early day of European settlement in East Africa, which is in the same style as the original house. The Manor features a graceful sitting room with large picturesque windows as well as a large verandah which offers amazing views of the giraffes as well as the Ngong Hills.
If you are travelling to Kenya then Giraffe Manor should be up there on your “to do” list. The experience will be one you never forget!

Michelle Obama, the White House’s First Lady has just ended her week-long visit in South Africa, not only to support and promote youth leadership and HIV Awareness, meeting the former South African president – Nelson Mandela but also taking the time out to enjoy herself at the Makanyane Safari Lodge for a night. Located in the beautiful malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, Madikwe is one of South Africa’s largest and most exclusive reserves, home to the Big Five with outstanding guiding experiences. Travelling with her two daughters (Malia and Sasha), her mother, niece and nephew, the family went on private game drives in the Reserve and saw the diverse array of mammal population located here. Staying in complete luxury with fine cuisine and fist class service, the Makanyane Safari Lodge offered the perfect hideaway for an unforgettable, authentic, African wildlife experiences.

Has anyone seen the new wildlife show on ITV recently? What an amazing series and definitely one to watch. The series is called Animal Kingdom and follows British vet Steve Leonard as he encounters a variety of adventures in the Erindi Game Reserve, Namibia. Steve Leonard explores the work being done to manage the balance of wildlife in the park while concentrating on the stories of individual animals. The series also examines the struggle for survival whilst dealing with a changing season.

The Erindi Game Reserve, is a jewel in the heart of the wild Namibian landscape and forms one of many national parks and reserves in Namibia, spans 175,000 acres and is home to over 15,000 animals and 300 species of birds. Namibia is described as one of Africa’s most picturesque and diverse countries and is located on the West coast of Africa between Angola and South Africa.

Our incredible journey took us 4.5 hours east of Isandlwana to the Elephant Coast and to the Ghost Mountain Inn near Mkuze. En route the scenery was spectacular. We travelled through small villages, green pastures and mountains – the roads were empty and exceptionally good. The hotel is so named as the mountain resembles a lady lying down looking at the sky

On arrival we met by the lovely Jean who is very passionate about the area and wildlife. Her knowledge is exceptional and her excursions include Lake Jozini where you an view elephants swimming, Mkuze Game Reserve, Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Game Reserve for the big 5, a local village where you can go back to school and attend a class or stick fight with local Zulu warriors. You can also visit the Isimangaliso Wetland Park and St Lucia, Tembe Elephant Park, Kosi Bay, Sodwana Bay for scuba diving, horse riding and deep sea fishing and also Border Cave which is a great archaeological site which has been occupied by humans for about 190,000 years
When we arrived the hotel was very busy as they had a group from Saga Holidays and Titan Travel but this only added to the atmosphere. However, they left within 24 hours and we had the lovely Jean to ourselves. She took us out on Lake Jozini which is one of the largest lakes in Southern Africa. Word had it that there was a herd of elephants on the far side. The afternoon was a perfect balmy summers day and the water mirrored the image of the surrounding mountains. After 20 minutes we saw the elephants in the distance – there must’ve been about 70 altogether down at the waters edge. The boats engine was cut and we sat in awe of these majestic animals. Two of them decided to give us a view to remember and play fought in the water – we were mesmerised.
On the 2nd day we did an afternoon game drive to the Mkuze Game Reserve. Again it was perfect weather and we were lucky enough to see white rhino, elephant, giraffe, and buffalo. We were also taken to a ‘hide’ near a water hole but unfortunately, the impala heard us coming and ran off but we did see a turtle, water monitor and buffalo.

Our time at Ghost Mountain Inn only lasted 3 days before it was time to go and i thank everyone especially Jean for making this holdiay incrediable!

With the Super 15 Rugby competition entering its final month of regular season action and with Sevens action coming to Twickenham this weekend, we at Africa Sky thought it was a great time to update you on the progress of the African teams.
Starting with the Super 15, the South African conference has so far seen the Stormers and Chiefs fly the flag. With 5 rounds to go the teams lead the third placed Bulls by 8 and 7 points respectively. In the overall standings South Africa would be represented by 2 teams in the playoffs. At the other end of the table the Lions are stuck at the bottom, level on points with the newest addition to the Super 15, the Australian Conference’s Melbourne Rebels. However, these positions are by no means final, as anyone who has watched Super 15 rugby will attest, a lot can happen in 5 rounds.
The IRB Sevens World Series makes its annual trip to the home of rugby this weekend as Twickenham plays host to one of the increasingly popular formats of the sport. This is the penultimate round of the tournament which has so far produced some fantastic games. Africa are represented by 2 teams in the main standings with South Africa lying 4th and Kenya 9th. The table is headed by the usual suspects in New Zealand and England.
South Africa has played consistently throughout this year’s competition with their best result coming in the USA where they beat Fiji in the final. Meanwhile Kenya has picked up points at both the New Zealand and USA stages this year and continues to show improvement. Whatever happens for Africa’s teams this weekend we are sure to be treated to an entertaining weekend of rugby.
Everyone at Africa Sky would like to wish all of the Africa rugby teams the best of luck for their respective tournaments.

A question which is on my mind and maybe on yours when traveling abroad is how good is the food and is there anywhere to eat outside of the hotel. Well if traveling to the Mombasa Coast, I can confirm that you do have a choice of restaurants and bars which are of good quality and have a great range of cuisine to choose from.
In Mombasa’s North Coast there is the one of the most popular restaurants, it over looks the beautiful Old Harbour and has a great selection of freshly caught seafood.
On Mombasa’s South Coast in Diani, you will find Forty Thieves a beach bar which is a great place to meet other guests of hotels as well as locals. Every Sunday they offer a traditional Sunday Roast which is delicious and they also have a selection of starters, salads, meats and puddings.
One last restaurant which I am going to mention is the magnificent Ali Barbours Cave. This restaurant is actually built into a natural coral cave this restaurant serves international food under the stars of the sky. The atmosphere is magical with a lounge to relax in before you get seated and staff which cater to your every need.
Whether its fine dining or just a quick bite to eat that you’re looking for, one of these restaurants are bound to tickle your taste buds.

However we do forget that Africa has some of the best under water scenery in the world and not forgetting their own sea mammals to spot.
If you are after world class diving, than Inhambane in Mozambique has to be at the top of your destination list, it has so much character as well as a great variety on the gentle giants of the Ocean. Though the diving here is known year round, different times of the year can offer different sightings both above the water and below.
Whale Sharks – This large living fish is one of the most beautiful creatures of the sea and can be found in the waters from October to May
Humpback Whales – These mammals can be seen jumping up and down the coastline from mid June through to September.
Manta Rays/Dolphins – Mantas can be seen all year round in this part of Mozambique as well as the Dolphins
If you are a diving fanatic then Barra Lodge is the a great place to lay your hear, enjoy the sea and the diving in the Barra Penisula.

Mozambique can be twinned with South Africa or even Kenya, which are both great places to stay and enjoy a “Big Five” Safari. So why not enjoy our special packages!!

The place to see this is Lake Nakuru National Park in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya.
It may not sound exciting but I cannot describe how amazing the sight is of the blue lake just evaporating with a sea of pink. The lake has warm alkaline waters, which produces algae. These birds love to eat making the lake an all you can eat buffet for them to enjoy.
The amount of flamingos vary throughout the year but the best time to see them in their thousands is July – August, perfect warm weather and hardly any rain.
Lake Nakuru is only a couple of hours from Masai Mara so perfect to combine with the Big Cat Park.

Why not take advantage of our fantastic itineraries where you can enjoy a night at this Park as well as at other National Parks in Kenya.

Lying in Southern Africa bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe, the Victoria Falls is known as one of the largest waterfalls in the world. If you are travelling to Zambia, this spectacular natural wonders of the world should be on the top of your to do list…. It is just incredible!

The falls has an unbelievable presents with its magnificent scale, raw energy and spectacular power it can be seen and heard from quite a distance. Travelling from July – September is the most popular time due to the falls being at a low flow state making this perfect for photo opportunities. Do not be deceived by the spray which is given off of the falls as not only can be seen at a distance but can make you absolutely drenched!
If you are an adrenaline junkie then I would definitely recommend one of the falls most exciting excursions, White Water Rafting, with its big drops and aggressive rapids this is an adventure which is out of this world and one you will never forget! With a group of about 12 you are in safe hands with the local guides all experienced to make sure you are not only safe but have the time of your life.
The Falls has its own bridge tour (a great laugh) which gives you an in sight to the history of the falls and why the bridge itself was built. You also have the opportunity to walk on the catwalks of the bridge where you can marvel at the Bridges construction and see some magnificent views of the falls.

We have some great packages and offers available for you to enjoy this fantastic sight. Call now and we can tailor-make you an itinerary around this sensational site.

The camp hopes to finish the 17 other tents before the end of the month. With this new refurbishment in place, the camp has released a special offer, combined with its sister property in the Masai Mara, Mara Intrepids Camp you can save 10% off your stay when booking 4 nights. To take advantage of these special offers, please visit http://www.africasky.co.uk/kenya-holidays/family-safari/ or call us on 08443329374.

I can definitely recommend both of these camps after my stay in Samburu National Park and at Mara Intrepids last year. Samburu National Park was absolutely amazing, as soon as we arrived in the park we spotted a pregnant cheetah sitting under a tree. The wide range of bird life and a fantastic variety of wildlife was just incredible.

Our Africa Sales Advisor, Ally, tells us of her recent trip to the Drakensberg Mountains…

After a 4 hour drive from the Drakensberg Mountains we turned off the main road onto a dirt track leading to Isandlwana Lodge. The lodge is set on the side of a hill overlooking the historic battlefields where the English fought the Zulus back in 1879.

The lodge only has 12 luxury rooms but all are tastefully decorated with rustic features in keeping with the landscape and has the most fabulous views out over the battlefields. I’ve never been interested in history but the lodge has a resident historian called Rob Gerrard. Rob gives the most fascinating and compelling insight into the Battle of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift and you can even go down on the battlefields and see where it all took place. Rorkes Drift is approximately a 45 minute drive away but well worth visiting. Rob is so passionate and descriptive that we could have listened to him all day. Rorkes Drift was named after James Rorke who settled in the area in 1849 to farm and trade. He died in 1879 but not before forging a crossing over the Buffalo River to improve travel between Natal and Zululand and this was called a Drift. Also at the lodge, we met one of the owners, a lovely lady called Pat Stubbs. Pat is originally from the USA and at the grand old age of 69 she invested her money into the lodge and moved to South Africa to oversee the building of the lodge. She’s still there now aged 82.

I loved staying here, the serenity, peace and tranquillity is mesmerising but its not a place for children.

If this makes you want to see a bit of South African history, why not take advantage of our 7 Day Kwazulu Natal Safari Package which includes Isandlwana Lodge itself.

This popular flight provides a bird’s eye view of the Phinda Private Game Reserve’s 23 000 hectares (56 800 acres) of pristine, game-rich wilderness and the Maputaland landscape. We flew over the vast pans and coastal lakes, over game-filled bushveld and densely vegetated dunes, to long stretches of beautiful coastline. We spotted a herd of hippo on the edge of the lake, before low flying over the coastal dunes for an amazing view of the Indian Ocean where we viewed a pod of dolphins enjoying the surf and some whales. This breathtaking hour-long journey is a great way to experience the region’s diversity and sheer beauty.

If you are heading to Namibia then a beautiful place to visit is Swakopmund, known as the adventure Capital of Namibia. The Town is pleasant with new modern arcades being built, but still keeping the history behind its old colonial style buildings. You see the German Influence in many of the buildings as well as many aspects of the towns’ daily routine. There is a great selection of cafes, bakeries and obviously because of the main harbour, a good choice of seafood restaurants, all using the “catch of the day” dishes. If you are struggling to know where to eat, the locals are really friendly and are more than happy to recommend somewhere for you. The local Casino and bars are great fun, opening up at night and making this town come alive. There is also a small cinema which shows all the latest Hollywood hits and legendry films.

The town comes into its own though with the wide array of activities that are available for all different types of guests to do during their stay. I would definitely recommend the Tandem Skydiving. The views from the plane are amazing but nothing compared to those as you fall and then Glide down with the spectacular 360 degree scenery. It is a breathtaking experience. The contrast between the South Atlantic and the Namib Desert is very special.

If you are looking to see the amazing coastline from another perspective, and you do not want to throw yourself out of a plane, then there is also the flight up the Skeleton Coast, known as the “flight of a life time”. You will reach new heights and see remarkable views of the coastline and landscape, including the shipwrecks that the coastline is famous for. There is no better way to see an aerial view of the surroundings landscapes and if you are looking to get an idea of the vastness of the Namibian countryside, this should be on your list of activities to do!!

Other activities that you can do from Swakopmund include Paragliding off the sand dunes, and then sand boarding down the dunes all in one day! You can quad bike through the vast desert areas on the outskirts of town, or you can travel down to Walvis Bay for the Famous Mola Mola Boat Tour. They are a wide a selections of other activities on offer including Horse and Camel riding, Bird watching and Sea Fishing. So, as you can see, there is something for everyone in Skakopmund!

Staying in Swakopmund is a welcome contrast to the tiny villages and towns that you will generally travel through en-route to the coast from either Sossusvlei or from Damaraland. It’s a place to explore and test your adrenalin junkie side, or kick back and relax in one of the coffee shops with an apple strudel or two!

After winning the toss and electing to bat England struggled to get going and the South African bowlers took advantage taking regular wickets to reduce England to 171 all out. South Africa’s batsmen looked on course to continue England’s misery getting out to 68-0 before the wickets started to tumble. Before long what had seemed like a routine victory for South Africa had turned into a real scrap which ultimately the English bowlers would win against the odds. The victory leaves England second in group B whilst South Africa is fourth.
Elsewhere in group A the African teams have been struggling for wins. Zimbabwe is currently fifth with one triumph whilst Kenya is bottom and, yet to taste victory. The two teams will meet on Sunday 20th March 2011 and hopefully each will still have something to play for.

My Lion Family makes horse whispering look lame, as its star Kevin Richardson looks to befriend a big cat with a mane.

The series follows animal lover Kevin and his unique relationship with South Africa’s Lions. Kevin is a self-taught animal behaviourist who has a passion for pushing the boundary of how intimate he can get with one of the world’s most powerful animals. It is his preference to ignore conventional methods of lion taming and instead rely on patience and whispering techniques.
Kevin operates in conservations around Johannesburg working to turn these fierce animals into kittens. If this sounds like your cup of tea then why not check out the programme, and if you get really caught up in the moment why not give us a call and discuss seeing Lions at close range. Who knows, you might even get to see Kevin taming a lion first hand.

If you would like to spend time with these magnificent animals, why not take a look at our South Africa Self Drive and Escorted Tour Packages. We even have a Lion Research package in Kenya.

Hot air ballooning is a great way to explore and discover more about a country and is definitely one of those “once in a lifetime experience”. You will experience, first hand knowledge of the destination as well as seeing better viewing of various landmarks and even game.

I was lucky enough to experience a balloon safari in the Masai Mara whilst I was there back in June. It was a very early start to the day with approximately a 2 hour “mini game drive” from the camp to the “landing site”. I am a very nervous flyer so at the time I was thinking, “Why not take the bull by its horns and finally overcome this phobia of heights”! – I still think to myself this was all a dream because I cannot actually believe I did it.

Upon arrival, the skies were perfect and clear, no rain and just about enough wind to keep us up in the air and flying. We were briefed by a guide who was joining us upon this adventure just explaining the health and safety of the balloon trip and the journey of the flight. This is where we saw just breathtaking views of the Masai Mara as well as some wildebeest and what I think were gazelle (not too much game as this was only the beginning of the migration but I can imagine what it would be like if this was peak migration time). The flight lasted just less then an hour, upon landing we were greeting with a champagne breakfast, which was very tasty. We then enjoyed a game drive back to the camp to refresh and reflect back on our trip.

This is one of the most unforgettable experiences I have had, so why not experience it first hand and add it to your holiday quotation!

Our Africa Specialist, Ally, has just arrived back from her amazing trip to South Africa and tells us all about it….

After an overnight flight with British Airways into Johannesburg International Airport and an onward connecting flight with Comair, we finally arrived at the new King Shaka (Durban) International Airport which is north of the city. Our path through the airport from baggage reclaims, Immigration and Customs went very smoothly and the Avis Rent a Car Desk was only a short walk just outside the building. We signed the paperwork and were soon on our way to the Drakensburg Mountains via the N2 highway. There are tolls on the SA motorways so be prepared but it is only about 7 Rand which is less than a £1.

Our drive took us south towards Durban and then north through Pietermartizburg until we met the R2 road leading from Winterton. Once off the main road the scenery was stunning. Wide open spaces dotted here and there with the odd round thatched hut or square breeze block house. Considering it was Summer time the pastures were very green and the rivers were flowing fast but apparently they’ve had more rain than normal this year. This road to the Cathedral Peak Hotel took approximately an hour but overall the drive took approximately 3.5 hrs. One minute we were crossing a river and the next going around the side of a mountain but it was amazing. Eventually, we started to climb higher as we neared the Cathedral Peak hotel which is nestled in the mountains and the road became narrower and the mountain became shrouded in cloud. The reception staff at the hotel greeted us with of those big South African smiles and we were shown to our room which was larger than we expected and it had its own little garden area.

The hotel is situated in a Cultural and Natural World Heritage site and mainly caters for hikers and walkers but they do cater very well for families as they have some rooms which will accommodate up to 5 people. Some of the activities include horse riding, quad biking, golf, bowls, tennis, badminton, fishing, bird spotting, free daily guided walks and hikes, a climbing wall and a small pool overlooking the river below. I can thoroughly recommend the horse riding and the quad biking. The food at the hotel was plentiful, very delicious and we found the wine exceptionally good value. The hotel was originally founded in the early 1900′s by Albert van der Riet and is still run by the family who have extended it over the years – there is so much history here and well worth a staying here.

Please see below an exciting account from one of our advisors Mark who travelled to Tanzania…..

Once in the Crater you are met by the vast plain that is the crater floor. Tracks fan out over the crater floor to the different areas and within minutes you are within site of the Wildlife. The first wildlife we saw was herds of Zebra. You are likely to see these on the way up to the Crater rim as well, but as you progress the other plains grazers are all evident. We soon came upon a water-hole with a Herd of Hippos wallowing in the morning sun. The birdlife sharing the waterhole and catching the odd ride on the backs of the Hippos was an amusing addition to a great picture. Surprisingly, Hippo is the most dangerous animal in Africa.

As you progress across the crater you are likely to experience Buffalo, Antelope, Hyenas and Lion. We even had a sighting of a rhino at long distance, but the haze from the crater floor made it hard to get a good picture.

There are rest stations on the edge of the crater and even here the wildlife will keep you entertained. Whilst having our packed lunch one of my friends had her banana “stolen” from out of her hands by one of the Hawks that inhabit the crater. The look on her face was a sight to see as the Hawk swooped down from her blindside and took the open banana just before she ate it.

Whilst in the crater you are probably going to experience quite a lot of traffic. This cannot be avoided as the crater is enclosed so drivers tend to see other drivers or groups and head over to see what’s going on. I did not think that this made the experience any less as the crater is an amazing place and its best experienced in one day so it’s worth putting up with the traffic to experience this amazing place and all the wildlife that it holds.

I have to say that one of the most memorable views that I have experienced in Africa was from the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. This amazing crater with all its’ wildlife seemed to come to life as the clouds cleared and the sun shone through.

The trip far exceeded all of the expectations that we had. The Porini camps are just a wonderful way to experience a safari and I cannot compliment the staff enough for making our stays so memorable. The food and service were great, the people so welcoming – we felt very privileged to be able to share their country and wildlife. Our stay at Pinewood was also very relaxing – a great hotel and great people again!
The gamedrives were fantastic with a wealth of animals (including the ‘big 5’). A mixture of times flexible to our requirements and the guide’s knowledge of the area/wildlife were amazing. Particular thanks to Domonic/Bill at the Porini Rhino camp and Mechak/Gerrard at the Porini Lion camp.
A special thank you for arranging the ‘birthday treat’ for Laura both at the Lion camp and the Sable Valley Tree House – both of which were very much appreciated.
I wanted to drop you a quick line to thank you for arranging our fantastic holiday to Kenya!
